Final Farewell in Berlin – Time for your last moment

To be with the deceased person once more. To say goodbye one last time. Not briefly, not formally – but for as long as you need.

At Atelier Magnolia Bestattungen in Berlin-Mitte, we have created a place that is fundamentally different from a classic viewing room. Warm, quiet, personal. A place where you can design your farewell in a way that would have suited your loved one.

Taking an active role in saying goodbye is possible and often the most important and comforting thing you can do during these days.

Grief is also life

What is a final farewell – and why is it important?

Saying goodbye means: being with your deceased person once more. Seeing the person. Touching them. Speaking with them. Giving them things the person loved. Experiencing the moment consciously before it is over.

Many people who have taken this step say afterwards: It was right. It helped. It is not an easy path, and yet it was important for the grieving process. Grief must not only be discussed; it needs space and room.

The final farewell is not a mandatory program. It is an offering for you. Whoever wishes to come is welcome. Whoever cannot or does not want to, does not have to. But for those wondering if it is right: In most cases, families tell us they are glad they did it.

What you can do with us

Because many families do not yet want to leave their deceased alone, a farewell at the open casket is possible with us.

You can:

  • sit with the deceased person and speak with them
  • touch and stroke them
  • place letters, photos, or mementos in the casket
  • play favorite music
  • raise a toast to the loved one
  • cry, laugh, sing, or simply be there
  • stay as long as you need
  • paint the casket lid

There is no right or wrong. You design this moment in a way that feels right for you.

For whom is the final farewell the right path?

The final farewell is for everyone who:

  • wishes to see their deceased person once more and be with them
  • wishes to grasp the death and experience the farewell consciously
  • wishes to give something, such as a letter, an object, or a photo
  • does not want to grieve alone, but together
  • wonders if they are ready for the farewell

But also for everyone who simply feels: A quick, formal farewell – that doesn’t suit him. That doesn’t suit her. That doesn’t suit us.

Lying in state in Berlin: What you need to know

Technically speaking, the farewell at the casket is a lying in state. In this process, your deceased person is prepared and presented in the casket – open or closed, according to your wishes. We take care of the hygienic care, the dressing, and the design of the room.

You can choose personal clothing or a shroud. You can bring casket offerings. You can furnish the room with your own items.

The lying in state can take place at Atelier Magnolia or for up to 36 hours after death at your home. As funeral directors, we can come by if desired and help with the dressing. Speak to us; together we will find the solution that suits you.

How long can the final farewell last?

There is no fixed time. You stay as long as you need. There is no time pressure with us.

What can we bring?

Anything that suited your loved one: letters, photos, flowers, a favorite book, an object. You can also bring music. There are no rules.
