What is a tree burial with BaumFrieden?
BaumFrieden is a specialized provider of tree burials based in the Netherlands. What makes it special: The ashes of your deceased loved one are not simply interred with a tree in a burial forest – they become a living tree.
The ashes are mixed with specially developed vital soil and serve as the basis for a young tree’s growth. This tree is then handed over to you – for planting wherever you wish. In your own garden, on private property, or in a nature reserve.
The deceased person thus returns to the natural cycle of life. And at the same time remains an integral part of the family’s daily life.
How tree burial with BaumFrieden works
Ash Addition
The ashes of the deceased person are carefully added to the specially developed vital soil (mother earth) of the young tree. Ashes and vital soil are thoroughly and carefully mixed – forming the basis for the tree’s new life.
Potting & Care
The desired young tree is planted with the ash-soil mixture and potted in the nursery. The young tree remains under constant observation and care in Kerkrade, Netherlands, for approximately four to six months.
Shipping & Planting
After the growth phase, the young tree is securely packaged and prepared for transport. Once it arrives, you can receive your tree and plant it in the place that means the most to you.
Which tree species are available?
BaumFrieden offers a variety of tree species – from native deciduous trees to special ornamental trees. Together with us, you choose the tree that suited your dear departed loved one:
- Birch
- Japanese Cherry (Ornamental Cherry)
- Ginkgo
- Maple
When choosing a tree, personal wishes as well as site conditions should be considered – for example, whether the tree will have enough space and light in the garden. We are happy to advise you. Prices and other tree species available upon request, delivery times are 4 – 6 months.

Where can the tree be planted?
One of the biggest advantages of BaumFrieden is: You are free to choose the location. The tree can be planted:
- In your own garden – the deceased’s favorite place, always close by
- On private property or the property of friends or family
- In a nature reserve – subject to approval from the competent authority
- In a burial forest – as an alternative to a traditional cemetery
For many families, this very thought is a deep relief: no cemetery visits, no grave maintenance, no obligation. Instead, a living memorial – always close to you.
Why are more and more people choosing a tree burial?
More and more families find it difficult to imagine a traditional burial in a cemetery. The desire for a natural, personal interment is growing. Tree burials combine both: they are ecologically sound and at the same time a deeply personal farewell.
The advantages of a tree burial with BaumFrieden at a glance:
- The tree becomes a living memorial – it grows and changes, but remains
- No cemetery obligation: The tree can be planted in your own garden or in a personally significant place
- No grave maintenance – nature takes over
- Trees improve air quality, provide habitat for animals, and promote biodiversity
- The deceased person remains an integral part of the family’s life and daily routine
- A form of burial that symbolizes the cycle of life in a special way
For whom is a BaumFrieden burial the right farewell?
This type of burial is particularly suitable for people who:
- loved nature and wished for a farewell in harmony with it
- did not want a traditional cemetery – and sometimes said so during their lifetime
- wish to leave something living and growing to their loved ones
- valued freedom and closeness to nature over tradition
But also for families who simply feel: A traditional tombstone – that doesn’t suit him. That doesn’t suit her. Then perhaps a tree does.

FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about BaumFrieden Burial
Is a tree burial in your own garden legal in Germany?
In Germany, there is generally a cemetery obligation for the interment of ashes – a free natural burial in one’s own garden is not permitted in this country. BaumFrieden operates in the Netherlands, where there is no cemetery obligation. The ashes are legally incorporated into the tree there. Afterwards, you can legally plant the tree – which is considered a plant, not a grave site – in Germany. We are happy to advise you: Tel. 01520 958 70 51.
Do I have to travel to the Netherlands myself?
No. We organize the transfer of the urn and all processing at BaumFrieden. You do not have to travel yourself. Of course, you can be present if you wish.
How long does the process take?
The young tree remains in the nursery in Kerkrade for approximately four to six months before being shipped. This time is needed for the tree to grow stably and for the connection with the soil to succeed well. For further questions, please contact us: Tel. 01520 958 70 51.
Which tree species are available?
BaumFrieden offers birch, Japanese cherry, ginkgo, and maple, among others. Other tree species are available upon request. We are happy to advise you on which tree species best suits your loved one and the site conditions.
Where can the tree be planted after delivery?
In your own garden, on private property, in a nature reserve (with official permission), or in a burial forest. You decide which location is right.
What does a BaumFrieden burial cost?
The costs depend on the chosen tree species and any additional services. We are happy to provide you with an individual offer. Simply contact us – we are here for you: Tel. 01520 958 70 51.
What is the difference between BaumFrieden and FriedWald?
With FriedWald, the urn is interred at the root area of an existing tree in a designated burial forest. You visit a place in the forest. With BaumFrieden, a new, individual tree is cultivated for your deceased loved one – and can then be planted in your own garden. This is a fundamentally different concept: more personal, freer, more alive.
Can I choose BaumFrieden for pre-arrangement?
Yes. If you wish to plan your own farewell in advance, you can do so with us. We also accompany you with funeral pre-arrangement – so that your wishes are implemented exactly as you envision them. We are happy to advise you: Tel. 01520 958 70 51.
