In an earth burial – also called coffin burial or body burial – the deceased person is interred in a coffin in a cemetery. The grave is provided with a tombstone or grave slab and can be cared for and visited by relatives.
In Germany, earth burial is one of the most common forms of burial, alongside cremation. It complies with the cemetery obligation that applies in most federal states: deceased persons must be buried in an approved cemetery.

At Atelier Magnolia, in addition to classic wooden coffins, we also offer our willow coffins – hand-woven, natural coffins that decompose in the earth and become part of the natural cycle. Many families who value a natural farewell choose this form.
Upon request, we design the coffin together with you: with flowers, drawings, and personal items. This way, even a classic farewell becomes something very unique.

Many families ask this question. Both forms are legal and widespread in Germany. The most important difference:
- In an earth burial, the deceased is interred in a coffin. A grave is created in the cemetery.
- In cremation, the body is cremated. The urn is buried in a cemetery – or in certain forms of natural burial such as tree burial or sea burial.
Some families choose earth burial because they need a concrete place of mourning. Others opt for cremation because it offers more freedom in choosing the location. Both are valid. We accompany you with both.

How does an earth burial in Berlin proceed?
1. Transfer
As soon as a death occurs, we arrange the transfer of the deceased person – from their home, hospital, or nursing home. 24 hours, 7 days a week, throughout Berlin.
2. Formalities
We take care of all official procedures: death certificate, deregistration, cemetery formalities. You don’t have to do anything yourself.
3. Coffin Selection
Together, we choose the coffin – classic, natural, or made of woven willow wood. Our willow coffin is a true centerpiece: sustainable, naturally beautiful, and touching in its simple form.
4. Funeral Service
We design the funeral service together with you – in a cemetery chapel, in our atelier, or at a place that suited the person. Music, words, rituals: everything according to your wishes.
5. Interment
The interment takes place in your chosen cemetery in Berlin. We accompany you until the very end – even at the grave.
